Former Poker Player Jamie Rosen Ups the Ante in the Vape Pen Space
Entrepreneurs and professional poker players have a lot in common: they both take risks based on limited information, and they know the right time to jump on an opportunity. Jamie Rosen, a former professional poker player and CEO of Dr. Dabber, agrees that his background played a part the success of the vaporizer pen and accessory company. “It’s a social game, there’s a lot of networking involved, and I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t been a poker player, since it gave me the freedom and financial ability to start the business,” Rosen explained.
Not only did his poker career give him the tools he needed to build his own brand, but it also sparked the idea. Being on the floor at poker tournaments gave him the ability to see a gap in the market: there was a lack of discreet vape tools available. Dr. Dabber sets itself apart from other vape pens in the market not only with its “high class, low profile” look, but its heating coil technology. Dr. Dabber’s pens use low heat to give users a thick, potent smoke without sacrificing flavor. With it’s large following on social media including over 30,000 followers on Facebook, it’s clear that Dr. Dabber’s design and branding resonates with customers looking for a subtle but strong vaporizing experience.
Rosen said that while Dr. Dabber’s first two years in business were a hard push, he has been surprised with how quickly the products penetrated the market since its relatively recent launch in 2013. Rosen emphasized that Dr. Dabber’s exemplary customer service is a main reason that customers were quick to accept and esteem the brand. “Our customer service is top notch – we take a different approach than many other companies and put customers first. We’re not looking to make a quick buck, and people realize we’re a brand to stand by.”
He’s able to do this by hiring great employees, something that he has found to be one of the most rewarding aspects of starting a new business. “Being able to provide jobs for people so that they can take care of themselves,” along with “being looked up to by an industry that I’ve been a part of for many years, getting recognition in magazines I’ve been reading since I was a kid,” are some of the most rewarding aspects of Rosen’s position now. In the next couple of years, he says, “I’d love for us to be on top, of course! We’re on our way up, and if we talk in a few years, I’d hope we’d be the first name you think of when it comes to dabbing.”
Not only is Rosen optimistic about the future of Dr. Dabber, he’s also confident that the cannabis industry is moving in a positive direction. In a space where there used to be an excess of crime, racial profiling, and harsh prison sentences, Rosen sees many opportunities to positively impact people’s lives. He told me, “I love seeing so many people get involved in the space, and I think that any company working with new technologies, putting in effort to fill a need, will find success.”
